Non Nobis Domine

Non Nobis Domine

in memoriam John Taverner

Psalm 113:9 (Vulgate)

“Non nobis Domine non nobis,

Sed nomini tuo da gloriam.”

“Not to us, not to us, O Lord,

But to thy name give glory.”

Non nobis domine is a verse from a popular short prayer of thanksgiving. It was adopted by the Nights Templar of the Crusades as their motto, and according to some accounts, the psalm (113) was recited after the English victory at Agincourt. Still used today, it can be heard recited, or sung, at the Paschal Vigil Latin mass. The text has here been set for unaccompanied SATB choir.
