Programme Note

Sidewinders, a species of venomous snake indigenous to the US and Mexico, are unique in their movement. Their sudden change in direction and powerful body jerks keep their prey guessing and their predators at bay.

Sidewinder illuminates these movements to a backdrop of the seemingly infinite desert. A life can be thrown upside down by one drop of a sidewinder’s fatal venom…

Performance Note

In Sidewinder the violin personifies the snake, the tuned percussion personifies a human, and the unpitched percussion the vast desert.

Percussion (2 Players) (Triangle, Snare Drum, 4 Tom-Toms (High, Medium-High, Medium-Low, Low), Suspended Cymbal (with Bow), Vibraphone, Xylophone, Glockenspiel).
